Chapter 32 · Part Seven — The New Human and the Next Civilisation · 2 min read

Six Shifts

Not new virtues. Six changes of position, each of which a single person can make this year without permission from anyone.

FROM CONSUMER

to custodian

A consumer asks what a thing gives them. A custodian asks what it is their business to look after. The shift is not to owning less but to being responsible for something — a street, a river, a craft, an institution, a piece of land — well enough that its condition is legibly your doing.

FROM COMPETITION

to contribution

Competition is a useful instrument and a terrible identity. It sets the reference point outside you, which is the mechanism that removes horizons. Contribution asks a different question — what is needed here that I can supply — and it has the practical advantage of being answerable.

FROM FEAR

to responsibility

Fear is accurate information and a poor instruction. It says something is wrong; it cannot say what is yours to do. Responsibility converts an unbearable general dread into a bounded specific task — which is, reliably, the moment the dread becomes survivable.
