Education as Remembering

If information is now free and judgement is scarce, then an education optimised for recall is training children for a competition that has already ended.

The traditional Indian pedagogical ideal was never primarily transmission. The upanishad — literally a sitting-near — describes a form of learning in which a student’s own seeing is drawn out in the presence of someone further along. Socratic teaching aimed at the same thing from another direction. Both assume that the valuable thing is not in the teacher’s possession but in the student’s capacity.

Four capacities seem to me newly non-negotiable, and none is currently examined.

Attention, taught explicitly as a skill: the ability to stay with one difficult thing for an hour. Discernment: how to tell whether a claim is supported, who benefits from believing it, and what would change your mind. Ecological literacy: where water, food, energy and materials actually come from and return to, taught concretely rather than as a topic. Interiority: some practised familiarity with one’s own mind, which is the only defence against systems designed to operate it.
